Joseph Roth says IKEA still coming to Centennial
2010-03-01 Update from reader “willa” who contacted IKEA: “We continue to move forward with plans for the future IKEA Centennial. We have received all approvals from the city, closed on purchase of the land, and now are meeting with consultants and contractors to finalize plans. We are thrilled with this progress, but at this time still do not have a timeframe for beginning construction or opening the store. “

DENVER, @ 2009-08-17 20:52:00 – The rumors have been swirling, some making their way into the 9NEWS information center, but IKEA says a slow economy will not stop the company from building a 400,000-square-foot store in Centennial.
“The economy doesn’t affect a plan like this,” said IKEA Public Affairs Director Joe Roth.
When his company announced it was building a new Colorado store in September 2008, officials insisted a down economy was better for business because it made the furniture store, known for its Scandinavian design and reasonable prices, appeal to more people who were looking for bargains.
The company is still in the planning phase of the store, which would be located near the Park Meadows Mall.
Roth says IKEA has gotten a permit from the city of Centennial and now owns the land on which the store will be built. The company is starting to interview consultants.
Roth says store developers are in constant communication with the city of Centennial. A real estate manager will meet with city officials this week.
“In our minds, we’re still on track,” Roth said, “we’re still coming.”
Once the planning phase is done, construction will begin. That phase alone can take a year and a half or more. So it will, realistically, be a couple of years before IKEA opens in Centennial.
Six to nine months before that opening, IKEA will begin recruiting new employees.
IKEA hasn’t committed to an opening time frame for the store, but Roth says the company is still excited about its newest venture.
“We look forward to opening IKEA Centennial,” he said.

Twitter LED table project mixes Bluetooth, IKEA & awesome
By Chris Davies on Friday, Feb 26th 2010
We’ve a soft-spot for odd Twitter-enabled devices – anything that lets us follow the SlashGear tweets in unusual ways has to be a good thing – and so Macetech’s Twitter end-table, which also throws in some multi-color LED action, is proving particularly appealing. The project builds on their previous LED table, an IKEA coffee table wired up with 81 RGB lights in a 9×9 grid, adding in a Bluetooth Arduino shield for wireless connection to a nearby MacBook Pro.

The MBP has some custom code that uses the Twitter
API to pull in anything tagged #ledtable, squirting those messages over to the table. The tweet then scrolls across the LED array, while the app waits 30 seconds before searching again.
