The Holiday Inn Sign Through Time

In the 1950s Holiday Inn established itself as a reliable hotel chain for weary road travelers and created an iconic sign to further set itself apart from competition.  The huge green and yellow sign stood at over 40 feet tall, rivaling the Welcome to Las Vegas sign style.  It certainly represents a begone era, but it’s hard not to miss that uniqueness when presented with the drab new Holiday Inn sign.

During the 1980s, the hotel group created a more modern back-lit design, but they kept a similar typeface, hearkening back to the handwritten look of the original design.  Today, the signs look like something out of an Ikea catalog and while the modern design is clean it hardly sets the hotel apart from neighboring chains.
